AmeriCorps VISTA Program

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

COSN sponsors the largest AmeriCorps VISTA program dedicated to opioid safety in the country, with the capacity to place 40 VISTA members in coalitions across California. VISTA members serve for one year, bolstering the impact of the coalitions to incite transformational change within health systems and the communities they serve.

Watch the Dialogue4Health Web Forum that showcases how the current partnerships with AmeriCorps service programs and opioid related work in the US create a microcosm to explore the power of collaborating with “outside” perspectives to build a new public health workforce--one focused on uniting diverse cross-sector partners around the common goal of building healthy communities.

VISTA SPOTLIGHTS

Recently, I created an interactive map of all the current medication take-back and sharps bins in Monterey County through google maps. The purpose of creating an interactive map is to make it easier for folks in our county to find accessible bins. Prior to this map, Prescribe Safe relied entirely on a one-sheet with addresses and relevant information for all bins. Now, someone can easily pull up the map online or on their smartphone, find the closest bin to them, and then pull up directions to the bin all in one step.

Jerome Caston played an instrumental role in the planning of a large town hall event, in which the coalition shed light on the current opioid epidemic, as well as provided a training on using Narcan. He oversaw the vendor resource fair, which featured local agencies who offer health services as well as additional recovery services within the Napa area.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

"Our VISTA has been by far the most value added aspect of the program.  Her dedication and work ethic, passion for serving disenfranchised persons; and demonstration of professionalism, tact, and judgement at such an early point in her career have been truly inspiring to the rest of our coalition members that she has worked tirelessly and for very little pay to assist."
